The National Steering Committee on Peacebuilding and Conflict Management (NSC) is an interagency committee that was established in 2001 and a secretariat to support it was fully operationalised during 2002/3 financial year within the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government.

As an interagency, the NSC brings together peace stakeholders in a bid to co-ordinate and consolidate efforts geared towards peace building and conflict management in Kenya as well as cross-border.

Functions of the Secretariat

The Secretariat is responsible for the implementation of the mandate and functions of the NSC on a day-to-day basis. Specifically, it is responsible in the following areas:

  •     Receives, collates, analyses and disseminates information on conflict early warning for response;
  •     Coordinates Peacebuilding and Conflict Management interventions;
  •     Coordinates the technical sub-committees;
  •     Capacity building on peacebuilding and conflict management maters at all levels;
  •     Development of the Early Warning and Response mechanism in line with the CEWERU;
  •     Monitoring and evaluation of DPCs;
  •     Develops an IEC strategy, including carrying out the Public Relations function;
  •     Maintains the Resource Centre to act as a point of information on PBCM;
  •     Prepares annual work plans and budgets;
  •     Is in charge of Finance administration and management (disbursement);
  •     Is in charge of development and implementation of Annual Work Plans and budgets;
  •     Is in charge of the Development of an M & E system.


Uwiano Platform for Peace @ 108 is a public platform to engage Kenyans in adding their voice to peacebuilding efforts in Kenya. This platform integrates the use of SMS, Incident Reports and Media reports to help strengthen peace and conflict prevention efforts in Kenya. It is a public initiative by the National Steering Committee on Conflict Management and Peacebuilding (Office of the President), which was established with the aid of the United Nations Development Programme-Kenya.
