Major accomplishments

  • The Sub-Committee was very instrumental during the UWIANO platform for Peace strategy that contributed to the delivery of a fruitful referendum in August 2010. The team facilitated regional/cluster meetings for stakeholders that resulted in conflict analysis and mapping. These meetings informed the interventions that were undertaken in various parts of the country thereby leading to a violent-free referendum process.
  • Facilitation of training of over 760 senior Government officials in peacebuilding and conflict management. This training was conducted at the Kenya Institute of Administration (K.I.A), a premier centre for training of public officers. This training was a joint partnership between UNDP Kenya and NSC under the Conflict Prevention and Transformation Project (CTP) and took place between June 2008 and March 2010. The training targeted District Officers, District Commissioners, Administration and Kenya Police Officers.
  • Training of all Peace structures including Provincial Peace Fora, District Peace Committees, Divisional Peace Committees, Locational and Sub-Locational Peace Committees; as well as Provincial and District Task Forces on Small Arms and Light Weapons across the country.
  • With support from UNDP, the Sub-Committee facilitated a rapid needs assessment for select DPCs across the country in March 2008. These are the DPCs that have since been provided with basic toolkit including office furniture and equipment, computers and printers, internet connections.
  • Facilitation for the revalidation of the Modogashe Declaration in 2005 and 2010.
  • Dissemination of TORs and Standard Guidelines for the Peace Structures in Kenya has been conducted across the country.
  • Development of a data base for Trainers, Trainees and organizations involved in peace work.
  • The Sub-Committee take pride in the planning that went into the success of study tours to Rwanda and Ghana in 2007; Cyprus in 2009 and Brazil and Chicago in 2010. These study tours have continued to inform the various interventions at different levels with regard to peace and security in Kenya.
