Faced with increased pressure to effectively support the increasing number of peace committees after the 2008 post-election violence (PEV), the NSC formed peace forums at the provincial level to ease the demands and provide on-spot support where needed.
Presently, the peace forums that exist are:

1. Rift Valley Provincial Peace Forum
2. Coast Provincial Peace Forum
3. Eastern Provincial Peace Forum

Peace Committees are community representative institutions that facilitate peace forums at the various governance levels and bring together traditional dispute resolution mechanisms involving elders, women, & religious leaders and modern mechanisms for conflict resolution (security agencies, NGOs).

The peace committee model has come a long way and is now embraced by non-pastoralists communities facing different levels of communal tensions (negative), violence and conflict within themselves. Its delegation to the drought-prone districts is no more, rather, the post-election violence (PEV) of 2008 witnessed in the country precipitated the replication of the DPC model in non-arid areas of Central, Coast, Western, Nyanza and the Rift Valley.
Roles of Peace Committees:

•     Promote Peace education, a culture of peace and non-violence
•     Enhance conflict Early warning and response
•     In consultation with the security and intelligence committees and other stakeholders, oversee the implementation of the peace agreements / social contracts
•     Support initiatives for the eradication of illicit firearms, safety and security
•     Ensure prudent administration and accounting of resources allocated to them
•     Document and keep record of peace processes and interventions
•     Facilitate trainings, community dialogue, sensitization and awareness raising
•     Put in place mechanisms to address inter-district and cross-border conflicts
•     Mobilize resources for the implementation of programmes/ activities
•     Network with other peace forums to enhance harmonious relationships
•     Monitor evaluate and report on peace and nation building programmes
•     Perform all other functions necessary for the realization of the objectives of the national Policy on peace building and conflict management

Media and communication subcommittee
i.    Develop a media strategy to support NSC in discharging her roles and responsibility.
ii.    Foster collaboration between NSC and media actors (editors’ guild, media house Press release).
iii.    Build the capacity of the media to mainstream conflict sensitive reporting and peace journalism
iv.    Develop monthly e bulletins reflecting updates on NSC activities
v.    Responsible for publishing and review of select documents.
vi.    Conduct media coverage (video, photos) during NSC functions.
vii.    Oversee the dissemination, information sharing of the partners.
viii.    Facilitate production of infomercials, and other IEC related materials.

Conflict Analysis Subcommittee
i.    Analyze Conflicts (including scenario building and developing response strategy)
ii.    Develop frequent Situational briefs and other related reports
iii.    Support the National Conflict Early Warning and Response platform 
iv.    Conduct conflict mapping for the country
v.    Develop and disseminate Policy Briefs on topical issues around peace and conflict
vi.    Periodically review conflict indicators
